Agencies in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a secluded beach, with some scientists anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a portion of a coastal area about 60km south of the city. A like substance has also been noted on areas of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Samples have been taken and submitted to the environmental agency for examination. A official remarked that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in food sources, temperature, precipitation or sunlight".
"They are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can turn the water reddish," the spokesperson said. "Few algal blooms are harmful, with numerous types functioning as a key source of food for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of reddish water in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations happen naturally but their frequency has increased in the past few years, partly due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that join together to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that normally serve as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that disrupts the normal functioning of marine environments.
These events have been compared to underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, sensitive marine ecosystems can be wiped out as sea creatures is killed or deprived of oxygen, providing more nutrients for the proliferation.
A southern state in the past dealt with a devastating phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a string of marine heatwaves, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The bloom caused surfers with sore eyes and severe coughing and may have killed up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.
A marine expert, who was involved in studying the start of the previous event stated, based on pictures of the current situation, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There have been lots of these outbreaks around Tasmania of late," she remarked.
The expert said this organism did not generate harmful substances similar to the type involved in the previous devastating algal bloom, but it does ingest microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"It's common to observe a outbreak of the organism after a proliferation of a different species, or something like a fish reproduction," she said.
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, said it appeared the potential proliferation had "grown significantly" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to similar cases in other places.
"So the state needs to deliver a strong warning here, the officials and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to study the specimens we've taken and we need to notify the community here," she emphasized.
The scientist said she had concerns for people's well-being after experiencing a prickling feeling along her limbs and skin while being sprayed with affected seawater.
An conservation group has stated lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist calling the event as an "natural disaster" and demanding the state premier to see and "assume command the reaction that authorities must be making".
"He needs to realize this is a disaster in the happening, economically as well as environmentally."
Speaking to reporters, the leader stated he was not aware of any relationships between the algae outbreak and the farming business, saying expert examination was needed before conclusions could be drawn.
"It is vital to guarantee our waterways are ecologically sound and sustainable," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across the island are our treasures and we need to guarantee the people and our economy can operate side-by-side to enjoy our seas efficiently and sustainably."
